The Lebanese American University (LAU), ELIE SAAB and London College of Fashion, UAL have partnered to establish the region’s most exciting fashion design program, with designer’s exploring how their design practice can regenerate the local and regional fashion sector. Lebanese American University launched the Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design in collaboration with ELIE SAAB in March 2013, with a view to creating a fashion design program that acknowledges Middle Eastern culture whilst establishing global relevance for Lebanese fashion practitioners. The inaugural class enrolled in September, 2013 and will see its first cohort graduate in 2017.

Over the past four years LCF, UAL have been delivering curriculum consultancy on the BA in Fashion Design. We also deliver intensive studio workshops as part of the introductory program as well as intermediary level, allowing students to experience LCF methodologies.

This is the first major strategic partnership in the field of fashion design between a prominent international fashion house, a leading American academic institution in the Middle East and a globally recognised fashion college. And by helping faculty become acquainted with the pedagogic  methodologies employed at LCF, UAL, with the intention that LAU promote self-awareness of their own brand and continue their professional development.

Hotel Odessa Project

The idea behind this project was inspired by the fashion community and the burgeoning design and style people in Odessa, plus the beauty and vibrancy of the city.

We went to Odessa and were supported by local Model Agencies, photographers, hairdressers, designers and accessory makers, make-up artists, milliners, sunglasses designers and more. The LCF partner in the Ukraine, called Donstream, and Helen Khilova provided office space for casting and logistics. Originally a one-day shoot, in the end we shot for 3 days across the city. The whole point was to "learn" through practice, not through theory.

Indonesia Fashion Forward

Jakarta Fashion Week

LCF’s Centre for Fashion Enterprise is collaborating with the Femina Group and the British Council, Indonesia (BCI), on a consultancy programme to emerging fashion designers in Indonesia.

The CFE team have established a regional hub for a select group of Indonesian fashion designers from which to deliver tried-and-tested workshops, such as New Market Entry, and Pioneer, to incubate the talent in preparation for an international market. Since 2012, Indonesia Fashion Forward has been introducing brands to new territories.

The Indonesia label Paulina Katarina explain the benefits gained from the program

The IFF/CFE Program provides an incredible platform for Indonesian designers to internationalise our brand. The mentors who were assigned to the program are extremely professional, experienced and helpful. They taught us how to reassess our own brand and business structure.

Analysing our identity and differentiation proved to be crucial in positioning our label in the international market. We became aware of our own potential and the program helps us learn how to maximize our strengths and manage our weaknesses.

So far the overall experience has been invaluable and we are very grateful to be able to participate in this program.

In 2015, Centre for Fashion Enterprise invited four young designers from across the Mediterranean to spend up to six months in residence at CFE in London.

The YOTA programme, funded by the European Commission, provided an opportunity for designers to receive crucial support from the CFE and extend networks with key contacts in the United Kingdom to benefit their business in their home country. The young designers benefited from CFE’s renowned designer business support programme, delivered by experts in business planning, sales, marketing (traditional and digital) and legal coaching.

Israeli design duo Muslin Brothers and Turkish designer Bashaques have completed their six month residencies in April 2016. Since the completion of their residency, Muslin Brothers have presented their collection at a showroom in Paris.

Basak Cankes (of Bashaques) said of her experience

“In the future I want to be in some universal fashion shows not just in Istanbul, so the programme helped me to make it real in London”. While Muslin Brothers commented, “It was great to have the depth of support and the opportunity to view your business from afar.”

The final two designers currently taking part in the YOTA programme are Maya Bash from Israel and Ece Gozen from Turkey.
